When I look to the left or right at a meeting of the Hillsborough Board of Education here's what I see - thirteen other individuals dedicated to making our school district a success. They each have unique abilities, and they bring to the table insights gleaned from their personal and professional lives at least twice a month.
But I also see several educators, two attorneys, three business people, and one scientist!
Which makes me the only board member with a creative/arts background.
While this doesn't make me the only advocate for the arts on our board - just as it doesn't make our board members with advanced degrees the only advocates for academic excellence - it does give me a unique perspective on what value the arts, or any of our extracurricular offerings, can have to a segment of our student population.
Would it surprise you to know that even among our real "academic stars" there are those that are motivated to work their hardest at their core subjects because they are allowed an outlet for their real passions in art, music, debate, or the school newspaper? And if that is true, how much more do these and our many other offerings mean to the kids who are struggling? Could it be the thing that gets them out of bed in the morning?
I am proud to be a supporter and an advocate for our music, sports, and clubs, and will always work to keep these activities available to all of our students.
